Former Congressman in Accident on Way to Fundraiser
ORLANDO — Congressional candidate Alan Grayson was allegedly at fault in a car accident last Saturday afternoon when he police report he ran a red light and struck a public bus.
The former member of the House of Representatives was on his way to a fundraising event for his election campaign when he reportedly drove his Mercedes through the light at the intersection in downtown Orlando.
The Orlando Police Department responded to the 12:08 p.m. accident, which is still under investigation. Two people on the bus were transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. Grayson, as well as his passenger, were not injured.
Grayson received a citation for the public transportation accident, according to the Central Florida News. There is no word if the bus passengers will be making any personal injury claims caused by the former representative’s reported negligence.
The fundraising event had a ticket price of $1,000 per person, with a guest list that included names like actress Cheryl Hines and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. It was to run from noon to 1:30 p.m. at a penthouse in The Vue near Lake Eola.
A Democrat, Grayson represented the 8th District of Florida in 2008, but he lost re-election for the seat in 2010. He became known for his rhetoric during the health care debates, both for his criticism of Republicans’ stance and for comparing the health care situation in America to a “Holocaust,” for which he apologized.
