How much do you know about flakka?
Law enforcement officials at both the state and federal level are now sounding the alarm about flakka, a designer drug that has recently exploded in popularity across much of the U.S., including right here in the Sunshine State.
Indeed, statistics show that in Broward County, police have responded to over 275 incidents involving flakka in just over four months this year, while they responded to a total of 190 such incidents in all of 2014. Furthermore, seizures involving synthetic drugs like flakka recently overtook cocaine as the illegal narcotic most commonly listed in county crime lab reports.
What exactly is flakka?
Flakka belongs to a class of drugs known as cathinones (i.e., bath salts), and produces a high in users similar to that of MDMA by acting as a reuptake inhibitor of both norepinephrine and dopamine.
How is flakka taken?
Flakka, which appears as either pink or white crystals, can be ingested by a variety of means, including snorting, swallowing, injecting and even vaping.
This last means of ingestion is especially dangerous, say experts, as it introduces the drug to the system very quickly and heightens the likelihood of an overdose.
Is flakka expensive?
Law enforcement officials indicate that the affordability of flakka, which is often secured from China and other parts of the world, is what makes it so popular. Indeed, a dose can be purchased for as low as $3.
Is flakka dangerous?
Yes. Medical experts indicate that flakka users cannot only experience hallucinations that last for days, but also easily overdose on the highly addictive drug.
These small overdoses, in turn, can result in everything from paranoia, elevated body temperatures and muscle breakdowns to kidney problems and even death.
Is flakka illegal?
The primary chemical component of flakka, known as Alpha-PVP, was recently placed on the DEA’s list of illegal controlled substances, meaning those caught with the drug can face serious criminal charges.
If you are facing drug charges of any kind — possession, manufacture, trafficking — the stakes are incredibly high. As such, you should strongly consider speaking with a skilled legal professional as soon as possible.
