Man Found with Weapons in Orange County Jail

Earlier in February, Orange County police reported arresting a  man who had loaded weapons and drugs on his person. After transporting him to the jail, an additional third loaded weapon was found in the man’s pant leg while undergoing a body scan. This incident has raised questions about the protocol officers follow during an arrest, and the deputy involved with this incident is currently under departmental investigation.

Florida Drug and Weapons Charges

Court documents state that sheriff deputies spotted the armed man with another in a car. Officers thought they saw drugs and arrested the two men after finding narcotics including crack cocaine and marijuana in the vehicle. They also seized two illegal guns from the vehicle after a thorough search.

Both men were taken to Orange County Jail where authorities put them through a body scanner during the booking process. Scanners revealed an additional loaded gun hidden in one of the suspect’s pant legs. This discovery earned him a charge of smuggling contraband into jail on top of the original findings of illegal drug and gun possession.

Currently, local community officials have asked the sheriff’s office why an arrested suspect managed to keep possession of a firearm after being taken into custody.

Carrying Guns in Prohibited Areas

With increasing rates of gun violence, Central Florida law enforcement pursues gun violations aggressively. Every year citizens are having their weapons seized because of their carrying in areas that expressly forbid such activity. Florida doesn’t allow citizens to carry concealed weapons in specific protected areas including:

  • Detention facilities, jails, prisons
  • Courtrooms and courthouses
  • College and university campuses
  • Elementary, junior and senior high
  • Law enforcement departments.
  • Airports
  • School events
  • Anywhere federal law declares a gun free zone

The harsh consequences of illegally smuggling a weapon into a restricted zone require a seasoned criminal defense lawyer to help protect your rights. It doesn’t matter if this is your first offense; the court treats illegal possession of a firearm seriously. Everyday situations that will incur a gun charge are:

  • Improper exhibition of a firearm
  • Felon in possession of a gun
  • Unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Illegal discharge of a firearm
  • Possession of stolen firearms
  • Illegal gun sales and trafficking
  • Using a firearm under the influence
